A Wife and Mother Reacts to the News that the War has Begun
Life in the mid-1800's was peaceful and predictable for most Americans. But with the Confederate firing on Fort Sumter, war became a reality for all American families. Couriers were often sent on horseback to alert farmers to the news that the war had begun, and that volunteers were needed immediately.
This image depicts a mother, cradling her infant, who has been enjoying a quiet tea with her husband, only to have it interrupted by men arriving to deliver news that the war has finally begun. Her husband rushes out to meet them with enthusiasm, but his wife is uneasy, fearful of how this news will affect their lives.
