A Promise to Return

Whispered Words of Comfort from a Father Leaving for the War

While the news that the War had begun was exciting and actually welcomed by many American men, both Northern and Southern, the moment of actual departure was certainly extremely painful, especially to men who were leaving wives and children behind. The scene is one which we might see in countless homes between departing fathers and their children; not melodramatic, but a tender moment between two people who are unsure of what is to come.
